Kenya, Africa - First Year Missionaries
Radical, sacrificial discipleship for college-age students.

Are you afraid that God will send you to “deepest, darkest Africa” if you say “Yes!”
to missions?

Don’t worry.  He only sends the “lucky” ones!

It's almost funny that so many Christians are afraid that God is going to force them to go to Africa against their will, like the innocent people in old pirate movies who were "Shanghaied" and dragged out to sea for years and years.

Lighten up.  God works through volunteers, not slaves.  But, if you're willing and God confirms that He wants you to go, you'll be in for the Adventure of a Lifetime!

Kenya is a magnificent study in contrasts.  Unimaginable beauty and unimaginable poverty dwell together.  Beauty and the Beast.

Adventures in Missions opens doors to travel to Kenya to combat the spiritual poverty that abounds.  The need is great among many of the nationals, who still confuse -- or combine -- Christianity with traditional religions.

Our primary destination will be the slums of Kibera.  Each team member will be asked to disciple at least two students.  You'll spend time with them one-on-one and study the Word with them.

As a group, we will train these new disciples in evangelism and missions.  Later, we will take them on a mission trip.  Our goal is to strengthen their faith, ground them in the Word, and expand their vision of what God can do through their willing lives.

Our journey will reach far into Kenya to work with refugees in the north, Masai in the central regions and the tribes along the coast near Mombasa.  Yup.  Deepest, darkest Africa.  And you will love it!

There is a desperate need for Christian discipleship in Kenya.  Many global religions and cults are rapidly moving into Africa.  They all need the forgiveness of sins provided only by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Our prayer is that God will draw many new believers to Himself through our labors. And, for these new believers to tell others.  And, on and on.  But here's the deal.  We plant seeds and water them.  Only God can cause true spiritual growth.  We do our part and God does the rest.

Wanna come along and see how God can use you?

Team Discipleship:
"As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another," as Solomon said. Each team member will receive one-on-one discipleship weekly. We'll also meet in groups three times a week to hear from FYM team leaders, local pastors and missionaries.

Housing:
Come prepared to rough it! (Hey, this is Africa!) We will be living, eating and traveling as much like the nationals as we can. Our main housing will be on the edge of the Kibera slum. Ideally, to address safety issues, we will have two houses on the same compound, one for the girls and one for the guys. Pastor Timothy's house is in the same neighborhood. The concrete-block houses have electricity and water (when operational), and a simple kitchen and bathroom. We will be making improvements to the houses while we're there.

Location Description:
Kenya is located on the equator at 6000’ above sea level. Daytime temperatures in Kibera range from 70-80º, and overnight lows fall to 50-65º F.

Kenya can be divided into four general regions:

  1. the coastal belt with hot, humid weather all year;
  2. the Rift Valley and central highlands, the most scenic areas, with lakes, mountains, and an agreeable climate;
  3. western Kenya with its northern tea plantations fading away to semi-desert in the south;
  4. and, Masai Mara National Reserve on the Tanzanian border in the northeast, consisting of vast, semi-arid bush land with sparse rainfall, and grazing cattle. (Discover the Rhythms of Africa, 2001)

Road Trips:
The central focus of the program will be in Kibera, but we’ll travel into different areas of Kenya. We may go to the coast, a Masai village, a refugee camp in the North, a safari, or a kijabe with the hospital and the Rift Valley Academy (a school for missionary children). These trips could range from a few days to a few weeks. The team will often determine where we believe God is leading us to minister. Other trips will be set up prior to our arrival.

Ministry in Kibera:
While we are in Kibera, each Adventurer will spend about 20 hours a week on a ministry internship. We will spend the first couple of weeks exploring a variety of ministries. Afterward, the internships will be selected based on each individual’s interests and God's leading. Safety is a high priority, so your internship might be done with another team member.

Discipling Youth in Kibera:
Each Adventurer will be asked to disciple at least two students in Kibera, spending time with them one-on-one and studying the Word with them. As a group, we will train them in evangelism and missions. Near the end of our time, we will take them on a mission trip to strengthen their faith, ground them in the Word, and expand their vision of what God wants to do through them.

Vision for Mobilizing the Kenyan Church in Missions:
We have a vision to mobilize the Kenyan church through missions, both within the country and elsewhere. In the future, we will build on the foundation that we create with the youth whom we are discipling now. Along the way, we will develop training materials for them. We are trusting God to produce great fruit from our labors -- and especially from the believers in Kenya.
