   Reports for Peru Trip
Update for Monday, July 26 49

7/26/2010  By: Stella Tippin, AIM staff member

It has been a pleasure serving the combined Common Ground/Meadow Grove team this past week both as an AIM staff member and as a Spanish-English translator. It was exciting to watch them grow in faith and boldness as they shared their testimonies and prayers with hurting people. It was equally exciting to watch them grow in their passion and hunger for Jesus Christ and His plans for their own lives.
My personal passion is for the Peruvian people, and so it was extremely encouraging to see the team sharing their faith with Peruvians, building meaningful relationships with Peruvians, and meeting the felt needs of Peruvians. These three things, along with learning how to listen in prayer and respond & evaluate after doing God's work, are AIM's five main goals for participants, and I hope they all integrate them into their daily lives once they return to their normal schedules in the States.
If any of you read this post, thank you for coming and sharing Christ's love with this people. May He continue to strengthen you, guide you, and speak to you as you re-integrate into life in the USA!
Peruvian cheek-kisses and "chu-chu-wa" to you all!! :-)

This has been an amazing week where God has shown up every day in a new way. We were all out of our comfort zone--either drawn out or pushed out by the Holy Spirit. We have given of ourselves in service and have been blessed beyond measure in return. We serve and are loved by an awesome God.

Today started out really good with our usual time of praise and worship following devotion. We were all really tired and exhausted from the week, but it was easy because all we did was visit really cool places we've never seen. Cathedrals, monasteries, catacombs, the beach, etc. And we got to eat salad at lunch! We haven't had salad since the States! And then we went to the Inca Market--it was so much fun to shop for our kids, friends, and family! After that, we went to an open mall overlooking the coast--beautiful! Tears as we said goodbye to Melissa and Juan Carlos--José's little sister. Also, the wonderful sisters and brothers in the Lord (Peruvian translators, folks from other states, etc.) that we met and have grown to love.
Thank You, Jesus, for it all! I love You, Lord!

Hi, everyone. I was supposed to write an update sheet for our first day here, but I forgot, so now I'm writing one for our last. As I'm sure all of you have seen throughtout the week, God has blessed us infinitely throughout the entire week. He has healed us, motivated us, and given us courage and strength. I have gone so far out of my comfort zone in the past week that I have forgotten the very idea of a comfort zone. I've met so many amazing people during the past week. I've riden on the back of a rickshaw, fist-pumped like a champ in the middle of a Peruvian church service, eaten guinea pig, paraded down the streets of Lima holding a banner for a Peruvian church, felt like a Jonas brother, and experienced the extent of God's love and blessings as we led hundreds of people to Christ. I have so many stories and experiences to share with the people back in Jersey, and I can't wait to see you guys in about 48 hours. Sorry this is kinda long, but I'm making up for the one I forgot to do. God is great. God bless you all!

This trip has really impacted me in many ways. The one thing I have really noticed is just God's Presence here. It is so powerful and awesome, and it has only increased my faith in Him. I have also grown a lot closer with everyone in my youth group.

One of my favorite parts of today--and pretty much every other day--is getting to spend time with the kids. All I have to do to entertain them is sing songs in English, teach them English words, or blow bubbles. They have so little, but they are so joyful.

Today we all helped out at a food fundraiser at the church, and it was a fun time, but we're all pretty emotionally/physically exhausted. We got pizza for dinner, though! No more rice and chicken, please!

7/25/2010  By: Rebecca Cooley, Full-time AIM missionary to Peru

My husband and I are AIM missionaries to Peru. God called us out of our middle-class lifestyle in 2002 during our first mission trip (with AIM to the Peruvian Andes Mountains). It is such a privilege to work alongside these two churches, their leaders, and youth. I've witnessed the faith and maturity the Lord has already given them and pray this trip will be a tool for God to work mightily in their spiritual lives. I see and believe it is happening. I trust the Lord to continue the work in the lives of the Peruvians they have touched with their witness and love. The local church will also provide good follow-up.
We've been able to be a conduit to bless the church, "Misión Cristiana Shalom," through your special gifts of a projector & screen and outfitting their kitchen with a better stove, pots, pans, many kitchen utensils, and tools. The pastor, cooks, and other brothers and sisters are so very grateful for your generosity. Bless you all!!!
I hope you will return to minister in Peru. The fields are ripe, and more workers are needed for the harvest.

God has ended a spiritual drought for me this week. I am very concerned of returning home and subconsciously putting Him aside. Please pray that I keep Him in my thoughts. On a brighter note, I have fallen in love with Lima. I've made many promises to return to many places and help many people. I will be doing so in the near future. This place needs a lot of light that I think I can bring. The people are completely different. They are so friendly and accepting. I have fallen in love with them, as well. God has used me more than ever, and I have brought more people to Him this week, more than I ever have.

Greetings from the one and only Hostal Fantasia. Tonight, following one of the most intense parades I have ever seen, I was involved in one of the most memorable prayer experiences of my life. We paired up with Peruvian women to pray for their church and their ministry. We prayed in Spanish and English but as members of the body of Christ, we prayed as one. Miles away, we worship the same God, and, despite language barriers, we can encourage believers worldwide through prayer. I was truly blessed by the women of Peru tonight!
P.S. Mom: Looking forward to a cheese platter upon my return. :)
P.P.S.: No chicken or rice for our return meal. Love, Lindsay and Lis

The things I enjoyed about today were the Peruvian donuts, chifa (Peruvian-style Chinese food), being able to parade down the streets preaching Jesus, seeing a little 7- or 8-year-old boy come to Christ...but the best was seeing Sergio with his Bible in hand, sober and ready to worship with his brothers and sisters in Christ. The Lord is awesome. I love His wonderful Name. All who are reading this, lift up the new believers! They need our prayers in this desert land.

Today was a very good day. It was an ATL day, which means "Ask The Lord." Our team, Yellow Team, decided as a group to go do a VBS and work with the children. The kids were mostly ages 3-6. We sang 3 songs for them, and then every person went to their own classroom. In my room, there were only 20 kids. We were only with the kids for about 10 minutes, which was hard, because we were trying to build meaningful relationships with them, and then we had to leave.
In the afternoon, we had individual ATL, where we prayed and asked God what we should do. Jenna G. and I were told that we should go back to the special needs school. We were told by Deb, our project leader, that the school would be closed, but when we arrived, we were invited into the school. We began to walk around and pray. When we prayed over a room, there was a teacher, a child, and her mother. The girl had Downs syndrome and a skin disorder. The girl's name is Melanie. Jenna and I played with the girl for a while and spoke to the mother and the teacher. We spent about an hour and a half at the school, then we had to leave.
We went over to the construction to help the others working there. We painted some of the rooms. In one of the rooms, we did splatter paint, which was so much fun. Today by far was one of the best days so far!

Today, I had the opportunity to work on construction. It was really awesome because we spent the day finishing up painting all of the rooms. When we finished, it was cool to look at the finished product and know that we helped to make the dream of this Sunday school a reality, and to know that students will use these classrooms for many years!!!

Today, I did sports evangelism both in the morning and afternoon. I shared my testimony in the morning, and both times we shared the Gospel, a good number of kids accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior. It was an awesome day!

The evidence of God's love for our Peruvian brothers and sisters is overwhelmingly beautiful. God has given me the privilege of serving alongside a wonderful group of surrendered believers. The best highlight for me has been witnessing the body of Christ in full submission, agreement, love, and service to the glory of His Name. Seeing a grown Peruvian man cry because he was given the first photograph he had ever had of his beloved son (taken by one of our participants) captured my heart completely. Thank You, God, for this great experience.

Morning -- Green team did construction, painting a building that will be used for VBS.
Afternoon -- ATL ("Ask The Lord") ministry. We asked God to lead us to where we need to minister. Me, Jeff, Austin, Matt N., Sarah Sessa, Jesse P., and Justin B. went to a school down the road and sang songs, did a skit about the good Samaritan. I shared my testimony, and we led two children to Christ. After we did more ministry in a local market, the boys played soccer with local boys. Sarah Sessa and I joined the construction team and finished the painting of the VBS buildings with other Common Ground girls. It was a good bonding time for us. :)
Please pray that we will feel rested tomorrow morning; we will be marching in a parade for seven hours. Good night!

God is at work this week in Peru, and His Presence is found all around us. My prayer has been for God to stir within us a heart of great compassion for His children to be His hands and His feet, to love with the same heart as Christ and to see this world just as Christ does. So far, it continues to humble us daily. Please continue to lift us up in prayer as God brings healing to this city.
"Stretch us, O Lord, that we will serve You beyond our comforts." In Christ's Name. Amen.

I am learning that God really is at work all the time! It is amazing to see His work here in the joy of the people in the church. I am also learning that it is better to go with the flow and that, even though things don't always go as planned, God still is changing lives!

Today in the morning, my group went to a special needs school and shared Christ's love with the kids there. It was an awesome experience, and even though the kids have disabilities and were living in poverty, they were some of the most joyful people I've ever seen. I really connected with 4 of them--3 little boys and a little girl. They were all so full of love and joy, and God really spoke to me through them. In the afternoon, we went to a marketplace and told people our testimonies and were helping lead them to Christ. About 20 accepted Him into their hearts today!
Last night, we went to a service at La Iglesia Shalom, and it was wonderful! Many people gave their lives to Christ, and afterwards, the whole church danced around for like half an hour. I have been having such an amazing time this week and have really seen God through the hearts of the Peruvian people.

This morning, my group went and prayer walked around one of the cell groups. While I was praying, I noticed how colorful and bright the plants were. They made me joyful! But then I thought about the people who lived there and wondered if they had true joy--joy in the Lord. Then I prayed for the people around me and that they would have true joy in the Lord!

Wednesday was one of the best days ever. We played with kids--which is one of my favorites, personally. A lot of us have very strong connections with many of the kids--to them we are rockstars (Austin especially). We are signing autographs, giving emails (and Marcos--Dad--if you get a bunch of random emails in Spanish, I can explain!). The children were like angels--psycho fangirl angels--but angels, nonetheless.
We went to a church, and the service was wonderful, but it was the dancing at the end that made it great.
I will end this with a direct quote from Austin Sekel:
"I never thought I would, at the age of eighteen, be in a church in inner-city Peru...fist pumping."
And fist pumping we were.

Green team did prayer walking today. We got 7 people to say they'd come to the church service tonight. We also prayed in front of a school. We got to go into the school and preach the Word of God. After that, we went to a sports evangelism program, and we got at least a group of a hundred and fifty with VBS, too. We played a lot of games and got a lot of kids to come to the service, and those were the highlights of the day until the evening service.
So I ministered to a man 2 days ago, and I prayed with him and asked him if he would go to church. I prayed so much. I asked the Lord to plant a seed in his heart for You to save him. During the service, he stepped forward and accepted Christ into his life. I am so overjoyed to see somebody beingg saved, and I thank God for showing me His love for me and others. Amen.

We went to the market and prayed for the people. We encountered a broken family: a mother, daughter, granddaughter. They were restored in the Lord: the mother received Jesus, and the daughter renounced a spirit of torment, among other things. A man came to the church seeking help for his suicidal thoughts. We shared the Gospel, and the man received Jesus and stayed with us for a few hours reading the Bible that was given to him by Chris, Morgan, and Emily. We experienced what Zech. 4:6 says, that it is by His Spirit that people are drawn. Thank You, Lord Jesus!

Today, we went back to a school we went to yesterday, and there was a beautiful little girl there whose name was Alison. When we walked into the school, she came up to me and asked my name and where we're from, so I told her. I asked her name, and she told me. Later, when we were singing, she was standing near me, and I motioned for her to come closer, and I put my hand out, and she put her hand in mine, so I pulled her closer and hugged her while we sang. When I started hugging her, and even before, it made her light up. When we were done singing, I went to find this girl that I met yesterday who I thought God wanted me to talk to, butt she wouldn't stay around me to talk to. Alison came up to me with paper and asked for my autograph. I had connected with her in some silent way, and, under my name, I put "te quiero Alison" ("I love you, Alison"), and she read it and got so much happier, and her beautiful smile shone, and she hugged me so tight. I knew that God wanted me to be a blessing in her life.

Today, Team #1 did sports evangelism in a local community. God used the game of soccer, or "fútbol," as they call it here in Peru, to reach those who have never heard what Jesus did for them. Halfway through the game, Jamie gathered all the boys and presented the Gospel. 14 boys and men made decisions to accept Christ! We could literally SEE the transformation in some of their eyes! God is awesome, and HE is at work in Peru! We are blessed to have this small part in His massive plans!

Today was such an amazing day! There is way too much to write here. Going to the church was an amazing experience. I couldn't understand the words in the songs, but the Holy Spirit was definitely moving tonight. It was so cool to hear everyone singing out to Jesus...in Spanish! I was thinking Heaven might be similar to tonight's worship. Different people, from different places, all praising the same God in different languages. At the end of the worship, everyone got up and danced around. We all joined them. It was a lot of fun. I can't wait to see what God is going to do the rest of the week.

Common Ground got in safely & settled in last night. Had a GREAT day yesterday with Meadow Grove as we met Pastor Moises, toured our ministry sites including 2 small churches we will be working with as well doing VBS & evening church services. As we toured, we would stop & circle for prayer. At the churches each of the pastors shared a little of their testimonies & we then circled around them to pray for them, their families & their ministry. What a precious opportunity! We then did some training exercises after a wonderful lunch prepared by the ladies at Shalom Church. Then last night we participated in the service at Shalom. Andrew & Ali shared their testimonies & we were so proud of them. Afterward we all came to the front, sang a song for the, by now full congregation & asked the church to pray for us. People came forward, picked a team member & prayed for them & committed to be in prayer for that person all week. As is typical of many Latin American churches, following the sermon & announcements, they clear the chairs & everyone has a time of worship & dance - yes, I said DANCE! It is very joyful & lots of fun! Today we begin our first day of ministry & are looking forward to whatever the Lord brings our way... :-)

Staff Arrives 3

Got in bed about 3:30 AM this morning after a long day of travel but couldn't sleep even then... Forgot how LOUD it is here with traffic all night long echoing through the concrete & tile building but we'll get used to it! Awesome meeting with Pastor Moises this morning at Shalom Church in Villa el Salvador outside Lima! Did some shopping for the group & visited Hannah's Home ~ a home for unwed mothers. Staff had precious worship time tonight! Gonna spend the day tomorrow setting up the hostel for the groups & praying & worshiping here in prep for the first wave to arrive Saturday night. Getting REALLY excited about what Pastor Moises has planned... Going into several schools to share in drama, song & testimonies... Working on a new building for the church to house kids Sunday School and bible studies... An all day event next Saturday with a parade through the district stopping to share the gospel along the way. He feels God has shown him there will be 500 people accept Christ while we're here & he's prepared the church for the work of discipleship after we leave! Isn't that EXCITING!!! Looking forward to the groups joining us this weekend.
