Ministry Description:
Culture and/or State Information
One of North America's most distinctive and culturally diverse cities, New Orleans is located in southeastern Louisiana on the Mississippi River delta. It is one of the most active ports in the United States, making it one of the world’s busiest waterways. But even more important to the city’s economy is the business of tourism, which is New Orlean’s top industry. New Orleans has always had a stark contrast between the rich and poor. The poverty rate is almost twice the national rate and the locals are victims of extreme economic segregation. With violent crime a serious problem and a strong voodoo presence, the region is in dire need of spiritual transformation.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina swept through New Orleans striking a devastating blow to the livelihood of every New Orleans resident. About eighty percent of the city flooded, leaving a trail of destruction and thousands of people homeless. Census estimates indicate that New Orleans lost half its population between July 2005 and July 2006. With the residents of the city feeling abandoned by the rest of the country, there is a feeling of loneliness and depression in the fight to restore the community from physical, emotional and spiritual devastation.
Ministry Description:
The primary ministry focus of your ministry in New Orleans is rebuilding lives instead of rebuilding houses. People who are overwhelmed and struggling with depression can be found in every racial and economic category. The locals in the community need help restoring their lives, homes, and hope.
You can help make an impact for Christ in New Orleans through meaningful relationships with the locals in the community. Outreaches such prayer walks, sports evangelism, feeding programs, and door to door ministry are potential ways to show God’s love to this devastated area.
Food & Lodging
Lodging is provided by local ministries. All have hot showers and AC. Air mattress or sleeping bags, bedding, and towels are recommended.

- Pray that God would physically, emotionally, and spiritually restore this devastated community.
- Pray that God will provide the residents of New Orleans with a sense of hope and encouragement, despite their unforgiving circumstances.
- Pray that the New Orleans community would feel its sense of worth and realize its importance in the eyes of God.

| Dress Code & What to Bring
|

Dress Code:
We do require all trip participants, leaders, and staff to adhere to a dress code on each of our EDGE mission projects. We do this to show respect for God, respect for ourselves, and respect for others. Please help us achieve this goal by teaching your group that our dress code isn’t because we’re extremists, but because we love God, we wish to honor His creation, and we don’t wish to cause others to stumble. You can find specific guidelines in your M101 manual or by contacting your EDGE representative.

Suggested Travel Insurance:
We highly recommend all program participants have health insurance coverage for international trips. It is important to know that most regular health insurance plans do not cover you overseas. Health coverage is not a requirement for domestic trips, but still recommended.

It is one of the most active ports in the United States, about 110 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. New Orleans can be characterized by its striking contrast between the rich and poor. Blocks and blocks of slums exist alongside the wealthy Garden District.
