Ministry Detail
Ministry Description:
Culture and/or State Information
The Fort Apache Reservation is home to the White Mountain band of Western Apache and encompasses more than 1.6 million acres in east-central Arizona. The entire reservation lies within the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest boundaries. Closely related to the Navajo tribe through culture and language, the Apache also believe that a number of supernatural powers exist and that everything has life. The combination of these beliefs, as well as the outside influences of local Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the Native American Church, have led to heavy spiritual warfare being waged within the community. Some of the struggles that can be attributed to this spiritual warfare are a heavy amount of alcoholism and drug addiction, as well as a high suicide rate. Individuals find themselves without hope and entire families are torn apart by these struggles, thus creating rifts in the Apache family system.

Ministry Description:
You will be partnering with a local church in an effort to encourage local Christians in the community and walk beside them in ministry. By building relationships with these locals you have the ability to strengthen the desire and enthusiasm that is emerging throughout the area.

Your team will also have opportunities to reach out to the lost Apache residents hurting from struggles with alcoholism, addiction, and suicide. There is a desperate need to be freed from the bondage that these struggles bring, and to be shown a sense of hope and purpose that can only be found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Some ministry options include Bible studies, Sunday school classes, youth services, game nights, community dinners, outdoor ministry, and door-to-door evangelism.

Food & Lodging
Food is prepared on site and safe drinking water is provided. Lodging will be provided at a local ministry. A single-sized air mattress or sleeping bag, bedding, and towels are recommended.

Recommended Prayer
- Pray a protective cover over the mission, from the spiritual warfare that is waged regularly over Indian country.
- Pray that the spiritual bondage created by alcohol and substance abuse will be broken over the Apache Nation.
- Pray that God will continue to stoke the fire in the hearts of the Apache locals who are chasing after him.

Dress Code & What to Bring
Dress Code:
We do require all trip participants, leaders, and staff to adhere to a dress code on each of our EDGE mission projects. We do this to show respect for God, respect for ourselves, and respect for others. Please help us achieve this goal by teaching your group that our dress code isn’t because we’re extremists, but because we love God, we wish to honor His creation, and we don’t wish to cause others to stumble. You can find specific guidelines in your M101 manual or by contacting your EDGE representative.

Travel Information
Airport & Transportation:
Groups may drive to Whiteriver or fly to Phoenix, AZ (180 miles west) or Albuquerque, NM (260 miles northeast). Both airports have excellent vehicle rental capabilities, but please book early. We suggest getting price comparisons on airfare and van rentals.

Groups must provide their own ground transportation. Extensive travel is common on the rez, so at least two vans will better facilitate travel for activities with local kids.

Shots & Vaccinations:
An updated Tetanus shot is strongly recommended for ALL projects.
