PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Colville culture is made up of colorful, sometimes ancient, tribal customs combined with modern ways. Just as is true for many other Native peoples, the United States government misled, misinformed, and mistreated the 12 tribes represented here. But the people, never warlike but always strong, have moved forward in spite of past trials.
In the relatively isolated, rural community where you’ll serve, there are plenty of solid families with warm home environments, raising kids with character, kids who will do well. However, beneath the surface of seemingly quiet neighborhoods, you will discover the same social ills now common to the rest of America. Alcohol and drug abuse, political and judicial corruption, and sexual immorality are tearing down the walls of civility and justice for these beautiful people. Many families are impacted, thus creating a huge rift in one of Native culture’s core elements, the family clan system.
Individuals find themselves without hope and entire families are torn apart by struggles with addiction. Adrift without a moral compass, kids are easy prey for an enemy who eagerly tempts and leads them to destruction and death. You’ll have an opportunity to help reestablish a sense of purpose and worth to those with whom you connect. And you’ll affirm that their lives matter to God, and to the community.
We want to train your team to see people through God’s eyes. God sees pain, hurt, addictions, shame, thoughts of suicide, loneliness, and hopelessness. AIM staff will challenge your team members to look beyond themselves and look deeper into the lives of the people. You will be challenged to build relationships with strangers, creating friendship and trust, which opens the door to evangelism and discipleship. You can make a difference in someone’s life.
PROJECT MINISTRY
AIM field partners include local missionaries, as well as tribal program leaders. Our ministries depend largely on what our partners thinks is needed and will be most effective in advancing the Kingdom of Jesus, and what gifts and talents your team brings to the table. We will work out a plan that will work for both of you. So, many of our ministry details will be finalized within six-eight weeks of the mission. Your team will receive those details as rapidly as they are finalized.
We will have many opportunities to spend time with students (and adults) in what we like to call “hang out discipleship” and life sharing. We will dedicate a significant portion of our resources and energy in children’s ministry to younger kids, ages 5-11 years.
Newcomers to the world of missions can grow and make a difference on the Colville rez. But we’ll be involved in relational ministry; spiritual maturity and prior field experience in missions away from home really helps. So, practice at home and bring some veterans to help newcomers get to the next level.
We will pour the Father’s love, hope, and foundations of faith into young ones, the “least of these” on the rez. Your team will mature before your eyes as they develop their relational skills. They will learn to let themselves be directed by God and to respond in obedience, producing the fruit of His spirit.
