Location Information
Location Description:

LOCATION: Tennessee

The economy of Appalachia traditionally rested on agriculture, mining, timber, and manufacturing, but the loss of jobs to mechanization in these industries have left much of Central and Southern Appalachia unemployed and poverty-stricken. Education in the much of the area is behind the rest of the nation, due to struggles in receiving government funding and a population that often fails to see a practical need for formal education. Today Appalachia has made efforts to join the economic mainstream, but is still severely lagging behind the rest of the nation.
