During this NEW six month journey, you’ll serve in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru for two months each. You’ll get to share the love of Jesus in some challenging environments, be trained in leadership development, and experience how to create and live in healthy, Biblical community. Throughout these six months, you’ll discover how to live life on mission wherever God calls you next in the world. Now, let’s go do this thing!
My name is Kate and I am from the same place as the author of The Wizard of Oz -- Chittenango, NY. Because I know you’re wondering, this means I grew up with yellow brick sidewalks, a Ruby Red’s Diner, and an Oz Cream Ice Cream Shop (and only one stoplight). I went on the 11n11 World Race in July 2013, squad lead 11n11 in January 2016, and have worked with World Race: Gap Year and World Race: Semesters since August 2016. My favorite country is Norway (because it’s actually Narnia), but really I haven’t been to a country yet that I wouldn’t go back to!
Your first two months in Medellin, Colombia will be challenging and filled with growth as you serve alongside our ministry partner Ciudad Refugio You’ll have opportunities to serve with recovery programs for people struggling with drug addiction, lead outreach for people experiencing homelessness, assist with feeding programs, and lead children’s ministry.
During your off days, you’ll get the chance to visit El Penon de Guatape — a giant rock formation at the top of a stunning mountain that can only be reached by walking up 700 steps! You’ll also get to check out the local coffee and chocolate farms and visit a national park to hike the Andes Mountains.
Next, you and your team will continue to Ecuador to serve with our ministry partner Inca Link in Quito, Ecuador. You may get to serve in a home for children with special needs, or with a feeding program that supports refugees and people experiencing homelessness. You may also minister in their home created for survivors of human trafficking, participate in an after-school program for children, or teach English and Bible lessons at a local high school.
During your off days, you’ll get to hike up the Pichincha Volcano and take a canopy zipline tour through the mountains in Banos. There may also be opportunities to visit nearby waterfalls, beaches or Cotopaxi for a day of hiking!
Then you’ll head to Lima for a multi-day debrief to recharge from your first four months. After debrief, you’ll travel to a variety of regions throughout Peru. You’ll partner with Youth With a Mission in Iquitos, where you will get to boat down the Amazon river to a remote village and spend time sharing the Gospel, encouraging the local church, and leading children’s ministry.
In Cusco, you’ll get to serve alongside Josephine House, a ministry that cares for children and orphans with special needs. You’ll also get to assist with improvement projects and share the Gospel through community outreach projects.
A large part of this journey is growing in your walk with Christ. We desire to model the way Jesus discipled his followers. Mentors, coaches, and fellow Racers will disciple you, while you serve, love, and disciple others.
You’ll spend the first few days of your trip at a training camp here at World Race headquarters in North Georgia.
You’ll get to experience raw Christian community as you travel, serve, and encourage each other. Once you officially join the Race, you will be invited to a private Facebook group to begin getting to know your squad.
We’ll provide coaching, video tutorials, scripts, and ideas for fundraising plus a free fundraising course and a blog so you can tell your story and accept donations. We also have structured deadlines to help you reach your goal.
Our commitment to risk management includes internal and external teams who constantly monitor and manage risk and create contingency plans as needed.
Our amazing Parent Ministry provides resources and communication so your parents feel supported and informed while you’re on the field.
