Community Overview

Native Americans are the number one poverty group in America today. Only 3-5% of Native Americans are Christians and a high percentage consider Christianity to be the “White Man’s religion.”

Meanwhile, violence is five times the national average on reservations. Death from drugs, alcohol, suicide, automobile accidents are a daily occurrence.  The unemployment rate can be as high as 90% in some communities.  The number of American Indians incarcerated is, at times, four times the national average. The research is worth every bit of energy you give it!

Midwest Indian Missions is an outreach, church planting, and discipleship mission located in Crandon, Wisconsin. Pastor Dewing and three generations of his family have invested their lives in this location for 47 years. They have established an amazing trust and friendship with the Forest County Potawatomi and the Mole Lake Chippewa people. Although they are definitely resistant to the message of Jesus, both tribes are comfortable sending their kids to the mission camps, special events, and outings with our teams. The Dewings have established two churches, one on each reservation. Both are contextual to Native culture but their doctrine is solid, not a bit syncretic, and completely Biblical.

We love having the opportunity to go and serve the people of these communities. Would you consider joining us?

Activities and Opportunities

Groups are encouraged to choose the ministry they would like to do throughout the week. We encourage you to pick the opportunity that most fits your group so that you can take ownership in preparation, prayer, and execution of the tasks you choose.

    • Children’s Ministry: Your team could have the opportunity to put on VBS for kids from both tribes. You could even put on a week long camp for kids, or run an overnight camping and canoeing trip. They would love for your group to use their strengths in working with kids (skateboarding, sports, you name it!)
    • Work Projects: There are some small work projects that the churches could use some help with.
    Lodging

While staying in the camp facilities at Midwest Indian Missions, your team will sleep in bunk beds in cabins. Bedding and towels are not provided, nor are pillow and toiletries. There are separate cabins for males and females. The camp has two restroom/shower buildings. Each has 3 showers with hot water, and 4 toilets. Accommodations are comfortable and close to a central camp fire pit, the kitchen/dining room, and the activities areas. If your team plans to venture out into the forests and rivers, you’ll need to plan for tent camping.

    Meals

There is a full kitchen with anything you might need. Meals are very much a team effort, and we have a lot of fun in the process! Teams will participate in meal prep and serving. Breakfast will be self-serve. Lunch, also self-serve, will be packed sandwiches, fruit and a side that can be taken to a ministry site. Hot dinners will typically be served after ministry and prepared by a local chef. Food is prepared and served in the kitchen/dining building.

    Travel and Transportation

You will need to provide your own transportation during the duration of your stay. Most groups fly or drive in and then obtain a rental vehicle if needed. The nearest airports are Rhinelander or Wausau. Alternate airports include: Green Bay, Appleton, or Milwaukee. Throughout the week, teams will use their own vehicles for transportation.

    Health and Safety

The safety of our participants is a top priority for us. We have both an internal Risk Management team and external Risk Management consultants. We use a multi-pronged approach to risk management – including monitoring information from reporting agencies and relying on the knowledge of our ministry partners. In addition to our own protocols (e.g., students must be with an adult at all times), our ministry hosts and partners will provide trip specific safety guidelines for the particular trip location. Our Project Leaders are trained in risk management and have access to both on-field and home-office support.

No inoculations or shots are required to enter Guatemala.
