We work with ministry partners in Native communities on eight reservations, mostly in the central and western United States. While American Indians can be found living almost anywhere in the United States, most remain on reservations.
The people are desperately in need of Jesus and spiritual direction. Many of them are in trouble, facing huge drug and alcohol addiction issues, family disintegration, and incredibly high suicide rates (even among the very young). The level of dependency and hopelessness is still hard for many people living outside the reservations to imagine, let alone understand.
This is a challenging ministry environment. Native Americans do not need more money, or more programs, apologies and reparations. They need a personal experience, a loving relationship with Jesus that will lead to hope and purpose.
In most cases, the nature of our ministry is very relational, with very little hands-on service work. Directed by a local pastor or ministry partner, we will be working alongside them, doing what God is already doing there.

Details & Logistics
There are two mission opportunities to serve American Indian communities in New Mexico. One, repairs and maintenance for a kid's summer camp with lots of hands-on service work, and two, VBS and sports evangelism at a long-time mission base. New Mexico missions are full of activity!
Ranging from bunk beds in dorm style rooms to sleeping on a church floor, depending on group size and available spaces. Each location will have sufficient showers and toilets. We may be able to accommodate specific requests if you make them early enough! :)
The food will be fresh and good. At the summer camp, staff prepares meals. At the mission base, there is a full kitchen with anything you might need. Meals are very much a team effort, and we have a lot of fun in the process! Teams will participate in meal prep and serving. Breakfast will be cold cereal, fruit, bagels, etc. Hot breakfasts could be available as well, depending on the group's willingness to contribute to the meal prep and cooking. Lunch will be packed sandwiches, fruit and a side to take to the ministry site. Hot dinners will typically be prepared by a local cook and served (after ministry) at the church each evening.
On domestic (USA) missions, the mission team must supply all transportation to, and during, the mission. Most of our Native American ministry partners are located in rural areas and require a 2-3 hour drive from the nearest airport. Many teams drive a bus or van from their home city to save on travel costs. Please ask about this. In some locations it is necessary to bring several vehicles. Your group may be split and sent in several different directions at the same time. If you choose to fly, we will direct you to the nearest airport once your location is selected. Should you choose this option, you would need to rent vehicles from the airport. Parking is available on site.
The safety of our participants is a top priority for us. We have both an internal Risk Management team and external Risk Management consultants. We use a multi-pronged approach to risk management - including monitoring information from reporting agencies and relying on the knowledge of our ministry partners. In addition to our own protocols (e.g., students must be with an adult at all times), our ministry hosts and partners will provide trip specific safety guidelines for the particular trip location. Our Project Leaders are trained in risk management and have access to both on-field and home-office support.
