Community Overview

We come alongside our ministry partners that serve the Navajo people near a reservation in the high desert of New Mexico at an elevation of 7,200 feet. The people in the Navajo community are desperately in need of Jesus and spiritual direction. Many are in trouble, facing huge drug and alcohol addiction issues, family disintegration, and incredibly high suicide rates (even among the very young). The level of dependency and hopelessness is still hard for many people living outside the reservations to imagine, let alone understand. Native Americans need a personal experience, a loving relationship with Jesus that will lead to hope and purpose.

There are a few mission trip opportunities serving the Native American community in New Mexico. Ranging from a kid’s summer camp with lots of hands-on service work to VBS and sports evangelism, our New Mexico mission trip opportunities are full of activity!

From all over the Southwest, young Navajo, Zuni, Apache, and Pueblo leaders trained during the summer camps are already making a difference among their people. Hundreds of kids enjoy this camp every summer.

Meals

There is a full kitchen with anything you might need. Meals are very much a team effort, and we have a lot of fun in the process! Teams will participate in meal prep and serving. Breakfast will be cold cereal, fruit, bagels, etc. Hot breakfasts could be available as well, depending on the group’s willingness to contribute to the meal prep and cooking. Lunch will be packed sandwiches, fruit and a side to take to the ministry site. Hot dinners will typically be served after ministry at the church each day or alongside the ministry events.

Travel and Transportation

Most of our Native American ministry partners are located in rural areas and require a 2-3 hour drive from the nearest airport. Many teams drive a bus or van from their home city to save on travel costs. If you choose to fly, we will direct you to the nearest airport once your location is selected. Should you choose this option, you would need to rent vehicles from the airport. Parking is available on site.

Health and Safety

The safety of our participants is a top priority for us. We have both an internal Risk Management team and external Risk Management consultants. We use a multi-pronged approach to risk management – including monitoring information from reporting agencies and relying on the knowledge of our ministry partners. In addition to our own protocols (e.g., students must be with an adult at all times), our ministry hosts and partners will provide trip specific safety guidelines for the particular trip location. Our Project Leaders are trained in risk management and have access to both on-field and home-office support.

Although domestic US missions usually present few unhealthy or dangerous situations, we are careful. The safety of our participants is a top priority for us. We rely on the knowledge of our host ministry partners. In addition to our own protocols (e.g., students should be with an adult at all times), our ministry hosts and partners will provide trip specific safety guidelines for the particular trip location during on-site orientation.  Our Project Leaders have been trained in risk management and at all times have access to home-office support, if needed.

At 7200 feet, there are a few key safety issues to keep in mind:

  • Overheating and dehydration are common health threats.s
  • Altitude sickness is possible, although not so common.
  • Rattle snakes and other poisonous desert critters are around-caution and alertness are helpful in avoiding them.
