You want to live a life that matters. You want to feel significant, empowered, and for your life to count for something. Behind Thailand’s beautiful beaches, its people’s smiling faces, and the tropical jungles lies a terrible secret: modern day slavery. In Buddhist culture, women work to support their families so men can earn spiritual merit as monks. Many parents send their daughters to work in cities where the only option is prostitution. As the country’s natural beauty continues to draw visitors, sexual tourism continues to grow. It’s estimated 60% of tourists visit the Red Light Districts—and 90% of Thai men visit local karaoke bars for the same reason.
Will you share the freedom of Christ with the broken in Thailand?
While in Chiang Mai, Thailand, ministry opportunities include:
Living Missionally: A primarily Buddhist country, every person you meet is likely someone who does not know Christ. Whether in a local restaurant, massage parlor, or shopping at the market, every interaction is an opportunity to share the love of Christ with someone who does not know Him.
Monk Ministry: You might have an opportunity to share the Gospel with Buddhist monks.
Learn and Encourage: You will meet a ministry that works with women who have come out the bars and are seeking restoration. You will learn firsthand the reality of trafficking in Thailand, spend time with these women, and encourage those who have dedicated their lives to fighting modern day slavery.
Bar Ministry: In the evenings you will have the opportunity to sit in a bar and talk with a woman on her break, learning her story and sharing God's love with her.
Kids Ministry: You might have the opportunity to share God's love with children in the local slums, through possible VBS or a child's favorite language: play.
God is calling you to journey with Him, to share His love with the nations and establish His Kingdom on earth. Will you join Him in Thailand?
Pray for Thailand
Thailand has been an island of stability and freedom in a troubled region, but “The Land of Smiles” is also awash with difficulties. Pray for these pressing issues and for the wise leadership and reform needed to address them:
a) The political upheaval of 2006-2008 revealed deep fault lines among various political parties, the military, and the royalty. Protests brought the country to a standstill.
b) The violent insurgency in the southern areas near Malaysia has claimed thousands of lives. It is a result of some discrimination against the predominantly Malay Muslim minority and the radicalization of the same.
c) Tensions with other neighbors, including disputes with Cambodia and more notably Myanmar, from which over a million have fled disaster and persecution into Thailand.
d) Structures of sin and vice continue to prosper, despite increasing efforts to combat them. Corruption allows unscrupulous men – in business, politics, the military and police – to enrich themselves while oppressing others. The moral blights of the sex trade, drug networks, crime syndicates and ecological degradation will remain as long as they are profitable and tolerated. Pray for the breaking of these structures of sin by God’s power.
