The lore of Dracula brings thousands of visitors to historic Romania to visit castles and experience the history and beauty of the region. Across the country, you’ll also take in idyllic vistas with horse-drawn buggies, cone-shaped haystacks, and endless herds of sheep. As you explore castles and experience the culture in your free time, you'll connect with the people you'll be serving.
Rural Romania reminds us of a bygone era. But as the newest member of the European Union, Romania is quickly rising out of the impoverished state it entered during Soviet times. Economic and political reform provides a foundation for growth and prosperity for a new generation.
But this prosperity is out of reach for the millions of Romani people, often referred to as gypsies, who live a nomadic life within the country's borders.
The Romani feel separated from a society that rejects their culture and way of life. They reject the authority of the Romanian government. Without identity documentation, the Romani are not eligible for government services and aid. Without permanent residence, they miss out on employment opportunities. In most cases, they are not even included in economic statistics, and their poverty and need go unnoticed.
The economic recovery in Romania has left them behind, but the Romani people are still precious to God. You’ll discover a new place in your heart as you bring them love and encouragement by connecting and building relationships with them and listening to their stories.
If your team partners with orphanages, you can bring hope and joy to the abandoned children who have been forgotten or ignored. You can work with local ministries to connect on a deeper level and serve the people in their reach by teaching English and life skills classes.
Will you reach back into history to draw people into relationships and God’s kingdom?
